Candelaria is the winner of the 2017 GdA Director's Award

The jury's verdict is in for the fourteenth edition of the Giornate degli Autori: the top prize goes to Candelaria by Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza.

The jury, chaired by the Iranian filmmaker Samira Makhmalbaf, is made up of the participants in the 28 Times Cinema program: twenty-eight young cinephiles, one each from every country in the European Union.

This is the statement released by the jury to explain their choice of Candelaria as the winning film: "This is one of those rare films which deliver kindness and warmth to the audience by showing an unconventional way of rediscovering love by an elderly couple struggling to survive in Cuba. In its visual aesthetics the film unites stunning actors' performance, a meaningful cinematography, warm Latino colour palette, unpredictable story development and a smart social message."

The jury whittled the GdA slate down to three finalist films and in their final deliberations came up with the winner. The two other films were M by Sara Forestier and The Taste of Rice Flower by Pengfei.

The GdA Director's Award carries a cash prize of €20,000 euros, to be split equally between the director Jhonny Hendriz Hinestroza and Beta Cinema, the international distributor, to promote the international circulation of the film.
