After a serious accident Giuseppe is out of work. His son Antò dreams of being an archaeologist and thinks his father's glass eye is a sign he has superpowers. It's just the two of them now, since their beloved wife and mother Angela collapsed and died while working in the fields. Now they've lost their home, too, and have taken shelter in a tent city with other seasonal workers. Through all this, Giuseppe still summons up the strength to hug his son every night and tell him a story. He's promised Antò he will have his mother back, one day, and will do anything to keep his promise.

In Una Promessa art and life are inextricably interwoven. The film is based on a story in the papers a few summers ago, when the farmhand Paola Clemente died while working the fields, combined with the absurd coincidence that our own paternal grandmother died in an identical fashion working the very same fields back in 1958. And just like Giuseppe's father in the film, before moving to Turin in the 1960s, our grandfather also worked as a stonecutter. This film is an attempt to reappropriate the soul of a grandmother we never knew, through the story and the body of another woman. Yet it doubles as a story of a father's love, intermingled with the themes of death, violence, fear, love and vendetta.

Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio (Torino, 1978) have been teaming up since 1999 to make films, documentaries and installations and take part in exhibitions and film festivals in Italy and abroad, winning numerous awards for their works. Their documentary L'esame di Xhodi (2007) won the Special Jury Prize at the Torino Film Festival and was selected for festivals such as the Cinéma du Réel in Paris, the Montevideo Film Festival and the Rome Film Festival. Their 2010 film Bakroman received the Best Italian Documentary Award at the Torino Film Festival, while in August 2011 their first feature film, Sette opere di misericordia, screened in competition at Locarno and won two prizes: the Don Quixote Award and the second prize, Youth Jury. In September 2015, their second feature-length film, I ricordi del fiume, premiered at the Venice Film Festival before going on to Visions du Réel in Nyon. Since 2006 they have worked closely with the production company La Sarraz Pictures in Turin.
