It has been fourteen years since Céline Sciamma, who was born in 1978, made her feature directorial debut with the film Waterlilies, after attending La Fémis, the most famous film school in France. She attracted attention abroad for Tomboy and Girlhood, but it was Portrait of a Lady on Fire, followed by Petite Maman, coming out in Italy in the fall, that earned her global recognition. Sciamma is also a screenwriter; she scripted films by Jacques Audiard (Paris, 13th District), André Techiné (Being 17), and Claude Barras (My Life as a Courgette). Sciamma makes feminist films that often have a queer dimension. Despite this, she has never been relegated to a filmmaking niche.
The monograph, published by Asterisco and curated by critics Federica Fabbiani and Chiara Zanini, features their own writings as well as articles by Silvia Nugara, Elisa Cuter, Daniela Brogi, Ilaria Feole, and Ilaria A. De Pascalis.
