The World in Shots is a film that intertwines images from today and yesterday, still photos and moving images alike, through a dialogue between two people musing over things that are visible and invisible in the world. Cecilia, in her 90s yet unstoppable - photographer, documentarian, screenwriter - is filmed by Paolo, photographer, director, and curator of cultural events. Cecilia Mangini, who relies on analog technology, developing and printing her film, decides it's time to venture into digital, which she feels shut out of. Ever since the cave drawings, images have always had a magic power. Photography is also magic, while cinema at times crosses over into witchcraft, enchanting the eye.

"The World in Shots is a documentary, an essay film, an autobiographical film - it can't be pigeonholed as belonging to one film genre, but it is definitely a film that takes as its point of departure thoughts about images, still images, photographs that have stopped time: The World in Shots. What we are calling a world in shots can be contained in a sequence of still images. Click…click…click…each shot has stopped time, the time one click takes, yet still images screened in quick succession magically become images in motion. The shot stops time; men, women, things - everything is trapped inside that rectangular portion of the world." [Cecilia Mangini and Paolo Pisanelli]

Cecilia Mangini (Mola di Bari, 1927 - Rome, 2021) was the first woman to make documentaries in the post-war period. She was a screenwriter, scripting several features films and over forty shorts, some of them made together with her husband, Lino Del Fra. Her camera explored Italy from the late 1950s and up to the early 1970s, often dwelling on southern Italy and specifically Puglia, seeking the rituals of an ancient culture being swept away by the rapid-fire transformations imposed by Italy's economic boom. In 2009, Mangini received the President of the Republic's Medal in Florence. In 2016, she started making short films and documentaries co-directed by Paolo Pisanelli.

Photographer and filmmaker Paolo Pisanelli (Lecce, 1965) has a degree in architecture and another from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. After working as a photo reporter and a set photographer, he started directing documentaries in 1997. His work has received awards at festivals in Italy and abroad. He also teaches and does audiovisual training, and has worked at the University of Teramo, the CSC in L'Aquila and Palermo, the DAMS at the University of the Salento, and the Gian Maria Volontè Film School in Rome. He is the founder and artistic director of the festival Cinema del reale, a showcase of audiovisual works that takes place in the Salento region every year.
