A ruling from the Court of Venice authorizes the screening of the film and recognizes the director’s moral rights. The news will be explained to the press in a conference open to the public on 5 September, 12.00, at the Casa degli Autori

In a striking turnaround, Antikvariati, the Georgian film by Rusudan Glurjidze, has been readmitted to the Giornate degli Autori competition and okayed for a screening for film fans, in accord with  the Venice Biennale, on September 6th, 11am, Sala Perla, in a reaffirmation of the filmmaker’s moral rights to her own work.

As is known, in the wake of an emergency decree by the Court of Venice taking action against the majority producer (the Georgian company Cinetech), Giornate degli Autori had taken the precaution of suspending the screening of the film, in an agreement with the Biennale.

“At the same time, however,” declares Giornate president Francesco Ranieri Martinotti, “we never for one second stopped supporting the unalienable rights of the filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze, that is, the imperative for her film to be shown to audiences in Venice. With this in mind, we decided, with the solidarity of all the filmmakers’ associations, to present a counterclaim to the Court of Venice, engaging a team of lawyers made up of Fabio Moretti, Manuela Molinari, and Giulio Berrino, at the international law firm Castaldipartners, which acted in concert with the attorney Guendalina Ponti, our advisor. The Court of Venice ruled in favor of our claim and explicitly authorized the screening, in recognition of the filmmaker’s moral rights. We can well say, then, that justice has been served, with respect to the cinematic arts, the creatives involved, the Georgian filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze, and her film itself. Above all, a precedent has been set for the Venice Film Festival as well, which will benefit the future of filmmakers everywhere.”

All the news regarding the latest ruling will be explained in a meeting open to public tomorrow, September 5th, at 12 noon, at the Casa degli Autori (Sala Laguna, via Pietro Buratti 1), in the presence of the filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze, President Martinotti, Artistic Director Gaia Furrer, and the attorney Fabio Moretti. The meeting will be moderated by General Delegate Giorgio Gosetti together with the journalist Marina Fabbri.
