Giornate degli Autori is entering its third decade, and together with ANAC and 100autori, presents a 21st edition with a program packed with a dazzling variety of events

A selection of the best in independent film, with films from all over the world; international guests at Giornate along with their films, on hand to discuss them with audiences and the press; a series of talks on key contemporary issues; and restyled venues at the Casa degli Autori and Isola Edipo, hosting networking and B2B events.

A RUNDOWN OF THE NUMBERS
Over the course of Giornate degli Autori 2024, the world premieres held in the Sala Perla, as arranged with the Venice Film Festival, include 10 films in competition, 1 closing film out of competition, 5 special events, and 3 short films (two on the Women’s Tales roster and a third, a tribute to the winner of Giornate 2022. Then 9 films on the edgy lineup of Venetian Nights, co-organized with Isola Edipo and screening in the Sala Laguna; 2 tributes, one to Emidio Greco (co-founder of our section) 50 years after his debut with Morel’s Invention in 1974, and another to Massimo Troisi, 30 years after the world premiere of his last, great The Postman. LGBTQ+ themes are covered by 5 films in and out of competition, vying for the Queer Lion Award. Plus 12 events at #confronti (Side by Side), our new series, both visual and verbal, devoted to issues and stories that speak to our past and our future, which features 5 special screenings, also held in the Sala Laguna. All in all, there are 5 first films in competition and 18 women filmmakers on the program (5 in competition, 8 out of competition, and 5 at Venetian Nights), with 27 nationalities represented and 1,260 films viewed, either as submissions or at major festivals and film markets.

THE VENUES
The films in the Official Selection – in Competition and Special Events, plus the short films at Miu Miu Women’s Tales 2024 – will be screened, as always, in the Sala Perla (at the Palazzo del Casinò) and open to both Venice Film Festival badge holders and the public. This historic theater, in the heart of the action at Venice, will also host the Giornate degli Autori awards ceremony, the awarding of the SIAE Andrea Purgatori Lifetime Achievement Award to Alice Rohrwacher, and that of the SIAE Award for Creative Talent. The press previews of films on the Official Selection and repeat screenings for the public will be held in both the Sala Perla and the Sala Corinto and Sala Volpi. Access to the Sala Perla, Corinto, Volpi, and the Casinò must be requested via the Venice Biennale website: biennalecinema.vivaticket.it

The Cinema Rossini in Venezia and the Cinema Candiani in Mestre will host repeat screenings open to the public upon ticket purchase at the venues.

The Casa degli Autori (via Pietro Buratti 1) is the venue of choice once again this year, for filmmakers, actors, press, audiovisual professionals, and photographers, all welcome to come work at the venue but also to attend networking and other events. Inside the Casa degli Autori, they will find the Sala Laguna, reopened on the Lido thanks to the joint efforts of Giornate degli Autori, Edipo Re, and the Vicariato di San Marco, and once again, thanks to a collaboration with Isola Edipo, hosting the Venetian Nights program as well as a series of masterclasses, the #confronti/Side by Side events, and an unmissable exhibition devoted to Anselmo Ballester, featuring original posters and sketches. For all these events, admission is free, on a first-come, first-served basis. The Casa degli Autori also hosts the Sala Bianca and the Gazebo, two tech-savvy spaces fitted out for press activities, conferences, and official Giornate degli Autori photocalls, as well as the live-streamed jury deliberations for the GdA Director’s Award. Access to all events at the Casa degli Autori is open to all and admission is free, with the exception of the screenings and the events listed at www.giornatedegliautori.com/booking.asp, for which reservations are necessary: they may be made starting 48 hours before the film/event and up to 4 hours before the film or event starts.
Just around the corner from the Casa degli Autori, on the Riva di Corinto, at Isola Edipo’s refreshment area and meeting space, this year Giornate degli Autori will add a special section reserved for meetings between professionals, festival guests, and international journalists. Magnificent sunsets guaranteed!

Other events not to be missed will be held at the Hotel Excelsior, in the Veneto Region Space, and at the Italian Pavilion, including Giornate’s annual appointment with women’s creativity, Miu Miu Women’s Tales, as well as the second edition of the Filmmakers’ Declaration, organized by ANAC, 100autori, WGI and AIDAC, together with France’s ARP and SRF and in collaboration with FERA.

Thanks to the collaboration with MYmovies, the virtual screening theater Biennale Cinema Channel is backwww.mymovies.it/one/channel/biennalecinema  – allowing Italian audiences to catch some of the films on the Giornate degli Autori lineup this year. The films will be available for 72 hours after their official premiere, to maximum 1,000 viewers.
