A young Georgian man named Lado is involved in smuggling antique furniture from Georgia to Russia. Tired of his immaturity, Medea, Lado’s girlfriend, buys for herself the apartment in St. Peterburg’s historic center. It is sold at a very low price because the apartment comes with its owner, Vadim Vadimich – an opinionated, old-fashioned character. At the time of the unlawful deportation of thousands of Georgians from Russia, Lado is caught and deported. The antique warehouse is raided, while Medea hides in a wardrobe.

“The Antique is a heart-warming parable about the hopes and aspirations of migrants in an uncertain world, but it also illustrates the indiscriminate and cruel ways in which politics derail human lives. The story is set in modern-day St. Petersburg during the illegal mass expulsions of Georgian migrants from Russia but was inspired by real events that caused great distress to my country and me personally. The cruel deportation campaign that swept across Russia was aimed exclusively at Georgian citizens. It was the result of an abrupt worsening of already strained political relations between Russia and Georgia. In the first few days of this campaign, 2,680 Georgians were expelled from Russia. The operation was never officially declared as a political retaliation. […] In today’s chaotic world, people are constantly moving from place to place. Some move in search of a better life and economic advantage, while others are forced to flee war and persecution. For some, migration is a matter of choice. For others, it is a matter of life and death.” (Rusudan Glurjidze)
Rusudan Glurjidze is a Georgian film director, screenwriter, and producer. From 1989 to 1991, she studied French language and literature at the Tbilisi State University, then switched to film studies. From 1990 to 1996, she studied film directing and scriptwriting at the Georgian State Film and Theatre Institute, taking Georgiy Shengelaia’s classes. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union destroyed the Georgian film industry, Glurjidze worked in advertising. She has been a producer and creative director of the Cinetech Film Production Company since 2007. Her feature directorial debut, House of Others, premiered in the East of the West competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, taking home the Grand Prix. The film was selected for numerous international film festivals, winning an array of awards, and became Georgia’s candidate for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards.
